Title: Transforming Leaders
Lead
or follow. Everyone was born to be a leader, not to be a follower, but, the
best leader is the one that knows how to become a follower. Leader, define as
someone who is responsible for or in control of a group, organization, country
etc.[1] In my own view, I love to
say that being leaders is being a creative thinker that possesses leadership
qualities in them. Without denying, each person of us that dying to be a leader
can simply Google’s the leadership qualities list throughout the internet. However,
becoming a leader is a learning process by taking the previous leaders as a
role model. Just simply go and ask any person that walking in front of you and
ask 5 names of his favourite leaders which can be the best role model. I’m sure
they can give you more than that, but for me, I can only give one name
throughout the whole most influential people that ever live. Though I’ve never met
this person nor saw him, I know he is the best person in the world. He’s no
other than one of the God messenger, Rasulullah s.a.w, Muhammad. During his
life, all the Muslim was informally trained to become leaders. Plus His
systematic system of leadership was adopted among western scholar which most of
the country in the world use nowadays. Rasulullah s.a.w himself left us four main
characteristic of being a brilliant individual and leaders. It was Siddiq,
Amanah, Tabligh, and Fatanah. Siddiq can be defined as honest, Amanah mean can
be trusted, Tabligh mean giving, and Fatanah mean wise. Leader should have this
characteristic which involving the give and take game play between leader and
followers. By being applying this characteristics leader can buy the followers
trust and respect which indirectly ease when working in groups. Besides this
four characteristic, it is a must for a leaders to have a strong knowledge in
what field that they deal with. It is because leader is the person in charged
for the decision making. Once leader failed in making decision, the whole
organization will fail also. Once fail, a good leader never left his followers
emotionally down, good leader should bring his team and together fix the
problem in achieving the objective or mission back.
Transforming
leaders is the hardest part of creating the best leaders. I’ve heard someone
say, all male is going to be a leader. Why? It is because they will marry one
day. In my opinion, the word ‘going to be a leader’ is totally wrong, because
best leaders should learn from others experience and the learning process
should start before being the leader. I’m sure most of the readers will
disagree with me because they used to the words learn from the experience or
learn from your own experience. Without denying I agree that is the best
quotes, but just imagine, here’s a simple example, let say a legless person or
technician come to you and tell you don’t skip the standard of procedure on the
stamping machine because he done it before and pay the price by losing his leg,
are you still want to get your own experience. So in this case I love to
emphasize that learn from others experience is better and safe than learn by
your own experience. In simple words, he did wrong and I’ve learned from him,
so I won’t repeated his mistake plus I’ve nothing to lose by doing same
‘experience experimentation’. This kind of experience is the one that I’ve
found in UniKL, I’m not saying all the lecturer or technician are legless but,
UniKL have the best line up in educating technical education. Despite in university
age term, ten years is considered as a little boy that still learning, but
UniKL achievement is more than that ten years. I’ve no doubt in other ten years;
UniKL will be at the same par with others known technical universities in the
world. The main difference between UniKL with others universities is the
lecturers, most of UniKL lecturers have been working in specific field or
industries longer than UniKL age itself. They were exposed in the real life
situation of accomplishing their job. The priceless part is when this savvy people
willing to share their experience by educating new leaders in UniKL. This is
the most crucial stages which is the mould for these new leaders in becoming
good leaders. Good leaders create good nation.
UniKL
itself never failed to create leadership qualities by emphasizing these
qualities in a formal learning session or informal way of learning. Though
UniKL is one the best platform in transforming leaders, we should know the root
of being a leader or lead came from ourselves. You are the person that decides
who you going to be tomorrow. If these leaders have their will, the way that
prepared by UniKl is one of the best choice. Becoming best leader is not being
at the top all of the time, but considering the limitation, risk, and making
wise decision at the right time. If we comparing with others universities in
Malaysia that practice only theory education, most parents or student will
easily pointing and choose others university then UniKL. In my point of view,
they’ve done huge mistake by doing that, UniKL always emphasize on the
application human capital in all of their students which I comfortable to call
leaders. UniKL previously emphasize on creating techno-preneur among their
student which create student that independently stand on their own feet. Now,
UniKL are creating new perspective which on developing leaders. These kind of
leaders is the one that will roll over promises and Malaysia Vision 2020 that
told by previous Prime Minister. At first, for me it is an impossible mission
on getting the Vission 2020. For the
aforementioned reasons, there is no doubt with UniKL creating new
leaders with technological minded, this Vission 2020 is possible to be achieve.
This are the valuable qualities that never be found in other universities.
Always
being number one leader and always on the top. This is the most common mistake
that can be seen on nowadays leaders. We can see leaders all over world having
difficulties in sustaining their glory. I’ll tell you why. As the world moving
on, the growth of technologies, the demand, and the environment are starting to
change. To be a leader that can barely face all of these challenges, the leader
himself need to have his own initiative of learning new things and adapting his
ideas to be accepted by new generation. Most of the leaders were not able to
blend themselves with this kind of situation. As a result, the shining star
starts to change into gloomy stars. That is why UniKL always keeping their
teaching aids as updated as they can. Indirectly these aids will guide and
expose the new leaders with most advance technology that exist in this world. Good
leaders also should know where to stop. It is because there’s a limitation in
everything, until one stages, leaders no longer can adapt in line with the
technology improvement and demand. This is the phase that most leaders don’t even
know it exist. During this phase leaders no longer think wisely, they will deny
most of the opinion from the followers. This phase is going to be the living
nightmares for those leaders that don’t know. That’s why I mention on good
leaders know where they should stop, step down and give chances for new leaders
among new generation. Stop and step down never mean that the leaders are weak
and never mean that they are free. These are the group that should be an
adviser, share experience and monitor whatever the new leaders are doing. For
an example, our previous Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, he left his
chair during his glory; as a result, people respect him and still seek for his
advice in solving difficulties. Plus he never hesitates in throwing his opinion
if he sees any wrong doings by current Prime Minister.
